Getting around
Travelling to Leeuwarden
If you travel by train from Schiphol Airport, it will take you about 2,5 hours to get to Leeuwarden. Tickets can be purchased at the railway station located at the airport. If you arrive by car you can find the access roads and the corresponding numbers on the NHL website: www.nhluniversity.nl.
Trains
The public transport system in the Netherlands is well developed. A dense network of trains covers the country. If you want to discover the Netherlands by train, it’s wise to buy a discount card. This card offers a 40% discount.
For the Dutch railway timetables, check www.ns.nl. Tickets can be purchased at the railway station; there are ticket offices and ticket machines.
The intensive public transport infrastructure connects Leeuwarden with all major cities in The Netherlands.
Bus travel
To travel by bus, tram or the underground (metro) you need a ‘strippenkaart’ or a chipcard. You can buy the strippenkaart or upload your chipcard at
a post office, a train or bus station, in a supermarket or department store. The bus station is nearly always next to the railway station. The departure and arrival schedules can be found at the station.
By car
You can reach all the big cities quite easily by car. Parking can be expensive and problematic in these cities. A cheap and quick way is to use a P&R. That’s parking away from the centre and then travelling by public transport to the centre. You buy an all-in-one ticket for about € 5. For that you can park for 24 hours and travel to the centre and back to the car park again.
The roads in the Netherlands are perfectly maintenanced.
Cycling
People in the Netherlands are great cyclists. The country is flat so cycling is the easiest way to get around. There are special bicycle paths and other facilities for non-motorised two-wheelers. You can buy a good second-hand bike in one of the shops in town or check www.marktplaats.nl
