Fries-Zweedse human-chain

Meer dan honderd Nederlandse en Zweedse communicatiestudenten veroorzaakten samen een “flasmob” in het Lineus University in Vaxjo, Zweden. Op woensdag 16 december vormden zij een neuriënde human-chain, verspreid over drie verdiepingen van de universitaire bibliotheek. Met deze actie vragen de studenten aandacht voor het belang en de mogelijkheden van internationale communicatie.

Bezoekers van de bibliotheek in Vaxjo werden verrast toen op woensdag middag vanuit het niets een steeds langer wordende lijn van mensen, hand in hand, werd gevormd over de drie verdiepingen van het gebouw. Open monden en verbaasde blikken verzamelden zich rond het spektakel. Het “hummende” geluid dat de human-chain produceerde was op alle verdiepingen duidelijk hoorbaar. Na zo’n drie minuten werd de ketting doorbroken, waarna men verder ging alsof er nooit iets gebeurt was. Open monden en grote ogen bleven verslagen achter.

Studenten van de NHL Hogeschool in Leeuwarden en Lineus University in Vaxjo te Zweden kwamen afgelopen woensdag bijeen in het kader van een project Interrnational Communication. Om duidelijk te maken wat er allemaal mogelijk is met goede internationale communicatie organiseerden zij spontaan een flashmob. Een video van de “International Flashmob” is binnenkort te vinden op youtube.

Sweden and the Netherlands connected

The fourth day of our visit to Sweden we went to Vaxjo University. The day began with a lecture from our host Joacim Martinson, about Swedish media.
After a typical Swedish lunch the group was divided in three groups. The Dutch and Swedish students blended in together to participate in workshops. One of the workshops was about Swedish and Dutch culture. Watching Fitna was a part of the workshop. “The Swedish students were a little bit shocked, but they also said that in Sweden there are also people who agree with Wilders.” says Theo, participant in this workshop. The second workshop was about the European Union. The students had to develop an idea for a movie about unity in the European Union and present a trailer for this film. “The workshop was really cool, we had to focus on the ‘European feeling’ instead of laws”, says Lieke who participated in this workshop.
The last group of students developed a flash mop to spread the word about intercultural communication. A flashmob is a pre-coordinated action in a public place by a large group of people (for example: collectively freeze in place). After which they disperse as if nothing ever happened. The best idea was chosen and performed in real life.
So, after the workshops a hundred Swedish and Dutch students formed a human chain in the library to symbolize intercultural communication and connection between cultures.
The day was properly ended with an awesome party in one of the student cafés on the Vaxjo campus.
